Most people associate treadmills with them being powered by an electric motor. But not too many people are aware that that isn’t the only way you can power one. Another way is power it with you!
If you’re curious about what they are about, let’s dive right in and talk about your potential treadmill without a motor.

Treadmill Without Motor?
So, what exactly is a treadmill without a motor and how do they work? Well, in its simplest terms, these types of treadmills work by your weight vs. using electric output from a motor to move.
As you start running your feet will start to push the belt and the faster you run, the faster the belt will turn. As you probably are guessing, manual treadmills (as they’re usually called) force you to workout harder, which is a good thing if you are trying to get in shape. The more you push yourself, the more calories you can burn.
This can be a good thing or a bad thing. One thing is that you are the one in control of how fast you run. So, if you are feeling lazy one day you might run a little slower than you normally do, whereas with an electric motor it controls the speed.
There are other things that may be better than traditional treadmills such as the safety aspect of it. If you were to fall or get distracted the treadmill will stop because you won’t be on it, whereas a regular treadmill it will usually continue to spin it’s belt unless you had some sort of safety feature built into the treadmill.
Another great thing with manual treadmills is they generally are less expensive that motorized treadmills. Which is great if you are on a budget and want to get a great offer and still get a good workout in at home. There is also the sound aspect as well. Motorless treadmills also are much quieter than regular treadmills, which is important especially at home and you don’t want to disturb your family or neighbors.
You can also factor in the electricity cost as well. If you don’t need electricity to power your treadmill you will be saving a good amount of money on your electric bill and you will also be limiting your carbon footprint as a result.
Type of Manual Treadmills
Here are just some of the different types of manual treadmills that you may want to check out.
Straight frame – These are the most common treadmill without motor that you will typically see. These usually allow you to incline its frame to get an even harder workout. These ones are the cheapest that you will find on the market today.
Curved Frame – If you are looking for the hardest workout you can get while not caring too much about price then these manual treadmills is the type you want. The design of these treadmills allow you to get the best workout where you burn the most calories per mile compared to almost any other type of treadmill. But as I just briefly mentioned these treadmills usually are the most expensive, so if you do decide to go this route then it’s best to take your time to shop around so you can get the best price possible.
Sitting treadmill – This type of treadmill is mainly used for disabled people or people in physical therapy. Most people probably aren’t interested in this type of treadmill, but I figured I should include it here. But basically these work just the way a regular manual treadmill would but they are much smaller and they are design for you to use them while sitting down.
